Recommend a Banned Book

- Hide Guidelines

Several months ago, PEN America, our award-winning literary journal, asked PEN Members to take part in a virtual Global Book Swap, where novelists, poets, translators, and editors from around the world exchanged their favorite foreign-language books. We published the results in PEN America 14: The Good Books and at The Daily PEN American.

For the 2011 Banned Books Week, we are asking book lovers to recommend a single banned or challenged book, and to write about how that book has influenced them as writers and readers. To find out what’s been banned, check out the American Library Association’s top 100 Banned Books from 2000–2009, the Banned and Challenged Classics list, or the Top 10 most banned books by year between 2000–2010.

Use the submissions manager below to send us your recommendations, in 300 words or less, by this Wednesday, September 28. You can also e-mail us. We'll be posting them on our web site all week.
